National Trust: Exploring Childhoods

An engaging animated summary of a five year National Trust evaluation.

CLIENT

The National Trust is Europe’s largest conservation charity. Sudbury Hall and ‘The Museum of Childhood’ based in Staffordshire, is an important building and museum in their collection as it focuses on engaging children through their childhood exhibits and historical artifacts.

BRIEF

We were commissioned by the marketing team at Sudbury Hall to create an animation that would summarise their five year exploring childhoods evaluation supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The National Trust team wanted to showcase their collection and exhibitions and how they had effectively impacted on their variety of visitors, collaborators, partners and volunteers.

It has been such a pleasure working with (Kino Bino) and everyone is so pleased about the final results.

RESULTS

We turned five years of hard work into a four-minute journey that is as entertaining as it is informative. While the film was made for visitors of all ages to enjoy, we chose a "child’s drawing" aesthetic to stay true to the museum’s theme.

We had a lot of fun on this project, combining photography of real items from the museum's collection with stop-motion and hand-drawn elements to give it a unique, textured feel. With a local young actress providing the narration, the final film was a wonderful way for the National Trust team to look back on their five-year journey and celebrate the project's success.

THE PROCESS

We commissioned experienced children’s screenwriter Gary Chudleigh to help us turn five years of project notes into a perfect four-minute script. Once the National Trust team were happy, we got stuck into the designs, giving everything that charming, childlike feel.

The animation took just over a month. We even spent a full day in the studio specifically for that stop-motion opening! Because we love keeping things local, we worked with Tucker Management to find our young narrator and Manike Music for the sound and recording.

We worked really closely with the National Trust team at every stage. Even though we had to work smartly to a specific budget, our collaboration and clear approval steps meant we could deliver a finished film that the team were really happy with, wrapping up their big project in style.
