CLIENT

Leicester City Council’s Healthy Teeth, Happy Smiles! initiative is a dedicated public health campaign aimed at improving oral health outcomes for children across the city. Since 2015, the team has been a vital resource for families and educators, implementing supervised toothbrushing programs in nurseries, pre-schools, and primary schools to combat tooth decay and promote lifelong healthy habits.

BRIEF

With tooth decay affecting 35.6% of Leicester’s five-year-olds, significantly higher than the national average, the Council needed a fresh approach to increase programme participation. They wanted to overcome common barriers like staff time and logistical concerns by providing clear, practical video resources for families and schools.

The Council identified two specific needs:

An Animated Song: A fun, catchy resource that doubles as a two-minute timer, turning daily brushing into an engaging habit for children.

A Live-Action Guide: A step-by-step visual tool to show practitioners how easy the programme is to run, helping to increase participation across the city.

The children really enjoyed this today. ‘I like it when they spit in the sink.’ ‘I do my teeth like that’ ‘I like the animals’ were some of the children’s comments. The tune is so catchy and just right for little children

RESULTS

Our 'Healthy Happy Teeth' animation featuring a catchy track by the Snazzy Badgers, has transformed oral health advice into a fun, interactive brush-along. By combining colourful characters with a rhythmic song, the video turns a daily chore into an event that children actually look forward to.

To ensure the campaign reached as many families as possible, we integrated a section at the end of the film featuring five key oral health messages. These were designed to be accessible to Leicester’s diverse communities through multilingual translations.

To provide a complete toolkit for the council, Rendah Films came on board to produce the live-action guide for practitioners. Their film showed the programme in action, featuring local children following the animated song in a real-world classroom setting.

Since launching, both videos have been featured on Healthwatch and have received a fantastic reception from the council, teachers, and families across Leicester.

THE PROCESS

We love producing animated songs because they have a unique way of making important information feel like play. We worked closely with the council’s public health team to ensure the advice was as accurate as it was fun and we created a cast of friendly animal characters, that would appeal to the target audience of under 5’s.

We brought Snazzy Badgers rhythmic track to life, using the characters' movements to pace children through the routine. The catchy lyrics help children remember the steps and master the technique. The animation was designed to keep young audiences focused for the full two minutes, with a visual countdown on the screen at all times.

To ensure the messaging could reach all of Leicester’s diverse communities we built a simple end-section for key health messages, allowing us to quickly swap in multilingual translations.
