A colourful EXPLAINER animation and live-action project created for Leicester City Council to empower children in care and celebrate their voices.
‘Whose Right is it Anyway?’
Explaining how Article 12 of the UN Convention is the right of the child - and how Leicester City Council help children to ensure their rights are met.
“Bella, Jack, Steff, and Lee brought their expertise and creativity to the table. Far beyond what we could have created ourselves.”
CLIENT
The Rights and Participation Team at Leicester City Council works to support and empower young people. They ensure children and parents have a direct say in shaping, planning, and evaluating the local services that affect their lives.
BRIEF
Three videos to explain the rights children in care have, how children are given a voice and how the council supports them.
Talking to young people about legal rights and care experiences can be a tricky subject. The council needed to break down Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into something accessible and engaging. We were asked to create an animated explainer to clarify how the council helps protect these rights. Alongside this, they needed two live-action films to capture the real-life experiences of children growing up in care.
RESULTS
The final video series simplifies information into easy-to-understand explainer videos that the council and community can feel proud of. The films are designed for distribution across local council platforms, community hubs, and educational workshops.
Authentic Voices: We invited local children in care into our HQ recording studio to record the voiceover for our animated film. Keeping the project community-led, and giving the young people real ownership over the film.
Multiple Language Subtitles: To ensure the messaging reached all families across Leicester's diverse community, we provided translated subtitles in Arabic, Gujarati, Polish, and Punjabi.
Character Design: We created inclusive, diverse, and loveable 2D characters that immediately put young viewers at ease and made legal concepts feel approachable.
Character Animation: Our gentle, fluid animation style kept the tone friendly and supportive without overwhelming the audience.
Accessibility Features: We utilised high-contrast, neurodivergent-friendly colour palettes and clear, uncluttered visuals to ensure the content is fully accessible to children with SEND.
The films premiered at the Phoenix Cinema with the council teams and young people in attendance. It was wonderful to see their hard work on the big screen and the excitement from the young people in seeing themselves and their voices on screen.
“Thank you for all your support! Your emotional investment in the purpose and value of the films is also truly recognised, and I feel helped to make the films as impactful as they are.
”
THE PROCESS
We kept communication clear and gave the council direct access to our creative team, backed by a production schedule they could rely on. We partnered with local creative agency Orange Fox Studios for the live-action films, while our team focused on designing the bright and friendly 2D characters for the animation.
